Lovely
and Amazing 90
What a brilliant script. About three sisters and their mother,
all of whom can't help obsessing about physical appearance. Sounds
like such a chick movie, what, with its head-on confrontation
of women's body issues and all. But it's not. Really. It's sarcastic
as all get out. I laughed a lot mostly at Catherine
Keener's acerbic, desperate wit. But more often than not, I was
hit in the gut by the emotional vulnerability. I'm sure you've
heard about the scene where Emily Mortimer, playing an actress,
strips down and asks her lover to frankly appraise her body. It's
every bit as brutal and brave as you've heard. Kudos, Miss Naked
Mortimer. I'll never be able to look you in the eye again.
The
movie's worth seeing just for the little actress playing the adopted
sister, Raven Goodwin. Man, is she good! She's struggling with
her nappy hair and her skin color. I'm telling you, she totally
broke my heart.
