A fabulous movie. (Mom, don't go see this one. And whatever
you do, don't take Nana. It's dirty.) The film hardly resembles
the trailer, which I was happy about. I feared it'd be too farcical
for my liking. But nope, it was smart, sexy, delightfully tense
and just riveting. It's about a woman with, um, issues,
who goes to work for a man with a few issues of his own. Without
giving too much away, it explores the need for control, and the
trust it takes to let go. Surprisingly, it goes a long way towards
giving S&M a real, healthy reason for being. Not that it needed
a reason, but you know what I'm sayin.'
Save
for a minor misstep at the end, this one's perfect. Maggie Gyllenhaal...
my new girl crush. One moment, she's all innocent and naive, the
next, she's lusty and conniving. And James Spader does his James
Spader thing, but with some delicious improvisations.
Did
I mention that I loved it?
