Jeff
Buckley & Gary Lucas
Songs to No
One 1991-1992
A frustrating reminder of what we've lost. Few artists hit me
like Jeff Buckley did, and I'll continue to buy anything and everything
his voice has graced. Unfortunately, this collection seems to
stand as proof that the well is, indeed, dry. I can't in good
conscience recommend it to anyone.
At
its best, we get tentative, embarrassingly early versions of "Grace"
and "Mojo Pin." At its worst, we get a picture of an
artist searching desperately for his voice. Are there moments
of brilliance? Of course. But these recordings do Jeff no justice,
and it's hard to imagine he'd ever want them released. Shame on
you, Gary Lucas. Couldn't you have let "Sketches" or
even "Mystery White Boy" ring out as his final note?
