Every
time I watch this damn thing, I become increasingly obsessed with
one name: John Mark Byers. He's the stepdad of one of the murdered
children, and I'm telling you, he's one of the scariest, strangest
(and okay, funniest) trainwrecks of a human being. No way
he didn't do it.
Things
that would give most detectives pause: During the filming of the
documentary, Byers gave a knife to the filmmakers as a gift. He
said it was new. Thinking it odd, they turned it over to the state.
Testing revealed that the knife had blood hidden in the hinge...
blood that matched both Byers and his son. Byers denied that he
ever used it. Then he changed his story, saying he carved up a
deer with it. And oh yeah, did he forget to mention that he cut
his thumb? His son, by the way, was the only child of the three
who was sexually tortured with a knife. Byers strongly denied
any involvement, but admitted to beating his son with a belt just
hours before he died. Not long after the trial, his wife met an
equal fate. Mysteriously, she died. The cause of death on the
autopsy report? "Undetermined," in spite of evidence
of blunt trauma and suffocation.
